- A Rock Ape is a small tailless Barbary Ape, a permanent resident of the Rock of Gibraltar This rocky Peninsular was also known as "Mons Calpe to the Romans, "Jeb-el-Tarik" to the invading Moors,and latterly "Un Monton de Mierda" by the Spanish. (Look it up!)It is said that if the Rock apes ever leave Gibraltar, then the British will also abandon the Rock to its Spanish Neighbours. My connection stems from a 3 year posting there as 1/3000th. part of the British Military Garrison in the early 60s.
